Avocado Sauce

Avocado Sauce
Avocado Sauce
This sauce is often served at taquerias. It is a thin sauce and served with burritos, tacos etc. The first time I had it I loaded my tacos with it thinking it was like American style guacamole. It was so hot, I had to throw my tacos away and order more. Now I know to use caution with this. Leave the seeds in the jalapeno, or take them out depending on your desired level of heat. Since you never know how hot a jalapeno is until you take a bite, please start off with just a little jalapeno and add more to suit your taste. And if you are really brave you can add more than one!

My Unexpected Spicy Adventure: A Simple Avocado Sauce Recipe

As a busy working mom, finding quick and easy recipes is essential. My days are a whirlwind of school runs, deadlines, and trying to keep my family fed and happy. So, when I stumbled upon this avocado sauce recipe – a staple in many taquerias – I thought it would be a perfect addition to our weeknight taco nights. I envisioned creamy, vibrant green goodness, a delicious complement to our crispy tortillas. What I didn’t expect was a fiery, unexpected twist!

The recipe itself is deceptively simple. Just a handful of ingredients – ripe avocado, lime juice, a touch of salt, cilantro for freshness, a splash of water for consistency, and a drizzle of olive oil. And then, the wildcard: the jalapeño. Now, I consider myself someone who enjoys a little spice, but this sauce…wow. My first attempt was a culinary disaster. I generously added a whole jalapeño, seeds and all, thinking it would add a pleasant kick. Let’s just say my tacos ended up in the trash, and I was left scrambling for a less explosive dinner option. Lesson learned: always start with a small amount of jalapeño, and gradually add more to your liking. The heat level of jalapeños varies wildly. You might find one mild, and the next one practically fiery!

Since that initial fiery mishap, I've perfected my technique. I now meticulously remove the seeds and membranes from the jalapeño, starting with just a tiny sliver. I taste test as I go, carefully adjusting the heat to my preferred level. This has allowed me to fully appreciate the incredible flavour of this simple sauce. The creamy avocado base, brightened by the lime and the subtle herbal notes of cilantro, creates a beautiful harmony. The touch of jalapeño adds just the right amount of zing, without overpowering the other delicate flavours. Now, our family uses this sauce for more than tacos. It's wonderful as a dip for tortilla chips, as a topping for grilled chicken or fish, and even as a flavorful addition to scrambled eggs for a quick and easy breakfast.

This avocado sauce has become a regular in my kitchen, a testament to the fact that sometimes, the simplest recipes hold the greatest surprises. It’s a quick, versatile, and flavorful condiment that’s perfect for busy weeknights, but remember – start slow with that jalapeño!

Tips and Variations:

  • For a smoother sauce, remove the avocado pit before pureeing.
  • If you prefer a thicker sauce, reduce the amount of water.
  • Experiment with different herbs and spices, like cumin or oregano.
  • Add a clove of roasted garlic for a richer flavour.
  • For a vegan option, ensure your olive oil is certified vegan.

This simple avocado sauce is more than just a condiment; it's a testament to the joy of culinary experimentation, and a reminder that even the smallest mistakes can lead to delicious discoveries.

This recipe is incredibly versatile, and I often find myself adapting it based on what I have on hand. I’ve experimented with adding a dash of cumin for an earthy depth of flavour, or a sprinkle of smoked paprika for a touch of smokiness. The possibilities truly are endless!

So, embrace the adventure and try this avocado sauce for yourself. But remember my fiery lesson – start with caution, and let your taste buds guide you! You might just discover your new favourite condiment.
