Mmmmm... bacon! This is a recipe from a chef that someone posted on Facebook. Once I saw it, I knew I had to make it! One piece of advice - go light on the salt because the bacon and cheddar both have plenty.

Bacon Potato Cheddar Tart: A Comfort Food Dream

My Bacon Potato Cheddar Tart Adventure

Let me tell you about my recent foray into the world of comfort food. I stumbled upon this incredible recipe for a Bacon Potato Cheddar Tart – and boy, am I glad I did! It's become a new family favorite, and I can't wait to share my experience making it with you. The recipe itself is surprisingly simple, but the result is a dish that's rich, savory, and utterly irresistible. The combination of crispy bacon, creamy cheddar, and tender potatoes is a symphony of flavors that will have you reaching for another slice (or two!). I found this amazing recipe online from a well-known chef and knew immediately that I just had to try my hand at making it. I’m no professional chef, just a busy mom with a love for good food. But even I found this recipe straightforward and satisfying to make.

The process of assembling the tart is a wonderfully tactile experience. Layering the bacon, potatoes, and cheese is almost meditative. I found myself completely engrossed in the process, enjoying the aroma of the bacon filling my kitchen. There's something deeply satisfying about building something delicious layer by layer, knowing that with each addition, you’re getting closer to the incredible final product. It took some time to get used to perfectly layering the potatoes to create that visually stunning and delicious stack! Once it’s in the oven, the tantalizing aroma fills the house, promising a meal that’s as heartwarming as it is delicious. The wait is definitely worth it. The end result is a perfectly baked tart, with a golden-brown crust of crispy bacon and a warm, comforting interior.

Tips and Tricks from My Kitchen:

  • Don't skimp on the bacon! The crispy bacon is a key component of this tart's flavor and texture. Use high-quality bacon for the best results.
  • Use starchy potatoes. Russet potatoes work well for this recipe because they have the best texture once baked. The result is tender and creamy.
  • Sharp cheddar is best. I find a sharp cheddar works well in this dish to complement the salty bacon.
  • Don't overcrowd the skillet. Make sure the potatoes and bacon are not over-packed. This can prevent them from cooking properly.
  • Let it rest. After baking, let the tart rest for a few minutes before slicing and serving. This will help it hold its shape and prevent it from falling apart.

Serving Suggestions:

  • This tart is delicious on its own but works well with a simple side salad.
  • A dollop of sour cream or crème fraîche would pair wonderfully with the rich, savory flavors of the tart.
  • It's also perfect for a picnic or potluck. Prepare ahead and slice to serve.

This Bacon Potato Cheddar Tart is far more than just a meal; it's an experience. From the satisfying process of layering the ingredients to the incredible aroma that fills your kitchen, to the taste of pure comfort in every bite – it's a recipe that's made its way into my heart and my regular cooking repertoire. It's a dish that evokes a sense of warmth, comfort, and togetherness, making it perfect for sharing with friends and family. Give it a try, and I guarantee you won't be disappointed! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Step-by-step

    • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
    • Mix the minced onions and garlic together.
    • Get a skillet (all metal, no rubber or plastic handles) or pie dish.
    • Coat the cooking area of the skillet with cooking spray.
    • Cut the parchment paper into a circle that covers the cooking area of the skillet, and place it inside the skillet.
    • Start lining the center of the skillet with a layer of bacon in a fan pattern, with one end of the bacon at the center and the other end hangs over the end of the skillet.
    • Each slice should overlap about a 3rd to half of the width of a bacon slice.
    • Take care to stagger the bacon at the center so you don't end up with a very thick layer of bacon in the center of the pan.
    • Slice your potatoes in about 1/4 inch thick slices.
    • After the skillet is completely covered with bacon, start adding potato slices in layers inside the skillet on top of the bacon, creating a layer of potato on top of the bacon.
    • After completely adding a layer of potato that covers the bottom of the skillet, sprinkle some pepper, onions/garlic mixture, and a generous portion of cheddar on top of each layer.
    • Repeat the previous 2 steps until the potato & cheese layers are stacked about 1 inch above the top of the skillet.
    • Fold all of the bacon strips on top of the stack of potato until the top layer is completely covered.
    • Place a small, metal skillet or pot cover on top of the tart to hold the bacon in place during baking.
    • Bake at 350 degrees for 2 hours and 30 minutes.
