BLT With Cheese Sauce: A Simple Recipe for Comfort Food

A Classic Comfort Food, Elevated

Let's be honest, sometimes the simplest recipes are the best. There's something incredibly satisfying about a perfectly crafted BLT – the crisp bacon, the juicy tomatoes, the fresh lettuce, all nestled between two slices of perfectly toasted bread. But today, we're taking that classic to the next level with a creamy, decadent cheese sauce. This isn't your average lunchtime sandwich; this is a BLT experience that will leave you wanting more. I've adapted this recipe from my mother-in-law, Amy Burgher, and it's become a staple in our home.

The beauty of this recipe lies in its simplicity and adaptability. You can easily customize it to your liking. Prefer a different type of cheese? Go for it! Want to add avocado or some crispy fried onions? Absolutely! This recipe is a blank canvas for your culinary creativity. The creamy cheese sauce adds a layer of richness and indulgence that elevates the entire sandwich to a whole new level. It's a perfect blend of savory and creamy, complementing the saltiness of the bacon and the freshness of the tomatoes and lettuce.

The Cheese Sauce: The Secret Weapon

The key to this elevated BLT lies in the homemade cheese sauce. It's incredibly easy to make and requires only a few simple ingredients. The process is straightforward – melt some butter, whisk in flour to create a roux, gradually add milk, and then stir in your favorite shredded cheese. Season with salt and pepper to taste, and you have a creamy, flavorful sauce that's perfect for drizzling over your BLT. I find that a sharp cheddar works exceptionally well, but feel free to experiment with different cheeses to discover your perfect combination.

Beyond the Sandwich: A Versatile Recipe

Beyond the sandwich itself, this recipe offers a world of possibilities. The cheese sauce is incredibly versatile. You can use it as a dip for vegetables, as a topping for baked potatoes, or even as a sauce for pasta. The possibilities are endless! The bacon, lettuce, and tomatoes can also be used in other dishes – a simple salad, a hearty breakfast burrito, or even a pasta dish. This recipe is a testament to the magic of simple ingredients and a little bit of creativity. It’s a recipe that’s perfect for a quick weeknight meal, a casual weekend lunch, or even a sophisticated appetizer.

From My Kitchen to Yours: A Taste of Home

I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as I do. It’s a comfort food classic with a gourmet twist, and it’s a perfect example of how simple ingredients can create an extraordinary culinary experience. Let me know how your BLT with cheese sauce turns out! I'd love to hear your feedback and see your creations. Happy cooking!

Step-by-step

    • To make the cheese sauce: Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add flour to butter and whisk until smooth, cooking it for about a minute. Slowly add milk to saucepan, whisking constantly. Cook and stir until mixture thickens, about 3-4 minutes. Remove saucepan from heat and add shredded cheese, stirring until melted and smooth. Season with salt & pepper.
    • To assemble sandwiches: Spread one side of each slice of bread with mayonnaise. Using half of the bread slices, mayo side up, layer lettuce leaf, 2 (or more if you want) tomato slices, and 3-4 slices of bacon. Top with other half of bread slices, mayo side down.
    • At this point you can cut it in half, leave it whole, or cut it into bite-sized squares. Either way, you're gonna need a fork!
    • Place sandwiches on plates, and top with cheese sauce. Serve immediately. Enjoy!
