My Homemade Apple Sauce Adventure: A Busy Mom's Kitchen Triumph

Life as a working mom is a whirlwind. Between juggling work deadlines, school pick-ups, and keeping the family fed, finding time for anything beyond the bare minimum feels like a luxury. But last week, something wonderful happened – I made homemade applesauce. And let me tell you, it was easier than I ever imagined! I’ve always loved applesauce, that sweet and comforting taste, but honestly, I never thought I could make it myself. I always assumed it involved some complex recipe, hours of simmering, and a whole lot of kitchen expertise I simply didn't possess. I was wrong. Dead wrong.

This wasn't some elaborate recipe passed down through generations; it was a happy accident, a spontaneous burst of "I think I can, I think I will" in the midst of a busy Tuesday evening. I had a few apples on hand, some basic pantry staples, and a surprising amount of free time (a rare occurrence, I know!). I didn't follow any specific instructions; I just winged it. I washed, peeled, cored, and chopped the apples, threw them in a pot with a little water, and let them simmer. As they cooked, I stirred in a touch of maple syrup and cinnamon – a simple combination that transformed ordinary apples into something truly magical. The result was pure perfection: a warm, comforting, and incredibly delicious applesauce that was so good, my kids cleaned out the bowl in minutes. And the best part? It was so incredibly simple to make!

Why this recipe changed everything: Before this experience, I viewed homemade applesauce as something reserved for culinary experts or those with an abundance of free time. This couldn't be farther from the truth! The ease of this recipe is what truly surprised me; it was incredibly quick and straightforward, requiring only basic cooking skills and a few common ingredients. The time it saved me compared to the many trips to the grocery store was phenomenal. Not to mention the taste! Store-bought applesauce simply can't compare to the rich, natural flavor of homemade. It's a taste of pure, simple goodness.

Beyond the recipe: This experience wasn't just about making applesauce; it was about reclaiming a sense of control and accomplishment in the midst of a busy life. It was a reminder that even the smallest acts of creation can bring immense satisfaction. The joy on my children’s faces as they devoured the applesauce was priceless, a reward far greater than anything I could have bought in a store. It demonstrated the value of taking time for simple pleasures, for connecting with the process of food preparation, and for sharing homemade goodness with those you love. The feeling of making something delicious and wholesome, without relying on processed foods and artificial ingredients, was both empowering and deeply satisfying.

So, my fellow busy moms, working women, or anyone feeling overwhelmed by the demands of life, I urge you to try this recipe. It's more than just a recipe; it's a chance to reconnect with your inner chef, to create something beautiful and delicious, and to discover the simple joy of homemade goodness. It's proof that even amidst the chaos, there's always time for a little bit of magic in the kitchen – and that magic might just be a bowl of homemade applesauce.

My top tips for success:

  • Choose your apples wisely: The type of apple you use will significantly impact the flavor of your applesauce. I recommend using a mix of sweet and tart apples for a balanced taste.
  • Don't be afraid to experiment: Feel free to adjust the amount of sweetener and cinnamon to your liking. You can also add other spices, such as nutmeg or allspice, for a unique flavor profile.
  • Patience is key: Allow the applesauce to simmer until it reaches your desired consistency. The longer you simmer, the smoother and more broken down your sauce will be.
  • Store properly: Store your applesauce in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Step-by-step

    • First wash the apples then pat dry.
    • Next peel, core, and mince apples.
    • Place the apples and water in a small tin or aluminum pot.
    • On high heat boil the apples and water.
    • As the pot comes to a boil measure out and mix the remaining ingredients (real maple syrup, and cinnamon/sugar) in a small bowl.
    • After the mixture comes to a boil, simmer apples and water for 8 minutes on medium-low heat.
    • During the 8 minutes mix in real maple syrup and cinnamon/sugar.
    • Stir occasionally with a spoon or baking spatula to avoid burning.
    • Continue to simmer until done, the apple chunks will break down into sauce.
    • Let the mixture sit off the burner for at least 5 minutes before serving hot or cool to room temperature before refrigerating for later meals.
    • Best kept in glass containers, but Tupperware is also usable.
    • Can keep in the fridge for up to a week, if you don't eat it all in one sitting!
