Plain Rice: My Time-Saving Freezer Hack

My Secret Weapon for Weeknight Meals: Freezer Rice!

As a busy working mom, time is my most precious commodity. Dinnertime used to be a stressful scramble, often resulting in takeout or something quick and not-so-healthy. Then I discovered the magic of making-ahead freezer rice, and my life (and my dinner routine) changed forever! This simple trick has become my secret weapon for effortlessly whipping up delicious, healthy meals, even on the busiest of evenings.

I'm not a fan of those instant rice packets; they just don't taste as good as properly cooked rice. But let's be honest, nobody wants to spend precious time after work meticulously cooking rice when there are other chores calling. So, I found a solution that combines the convenience of ready-made rice with the satisfying flavour of freshly-cooked grains. Enter: my freezer rice stash!

The Process: It’s incredibly simple. I cook my rice – I love sushi rice, but any kind works – following package instructions. Once cooked, I immediately rinse it under cold water to halt the cooking process and cool it down quickly. This prevents the rice from becoming mushy. Then, I portion the rice into freezer bags (quart-size bags work perfectly for my family of four). I make sure to squeeze out as much air as possible before sealing the bags. This prevents freezer burn and keeps the rice fresh.

Now, here’s the best part: I store these bags in my freezer. When I need rice, I simply transfer a bag from the freezer to the refrigerator the night before, or even just a few hours before I plan on using it. The rice thaws quickly and is ready to be incorporated into stir-fries, rice bowls, or any dish that calls for cooked rice.

Why This Works: This method is a game changer for several reasons. First, it saves an immense amount of time on busy weeknights. Preparing rice in advance frees up valuable time that I can dedicate to other tasks, like spending quality time with my family or tackling those never-ending household chores. Second, it's a fantastic way to reduce food waste. I only cook as much rice as I need, reducing the chances of leftovers going bad. Finally, it's incredibly versatile. I use this method for all kinds of rice – brown rice, white rice, even quinoa!

Beyond the Basics: I've expanded on this idea to include other freezer staples. I've started freezing cooked quinoa and even pre-chopped vegetables. Having these ingredients on hand ensures that even on those days when I feel completely depleted, I can quickly whip up a healthy and satisfying meal.

This simple freezer hack has completely transformed my approach to meal prep. It's become an essential part of my weekly routine, and I highly recommend it to any busy individual or family who values convenience, healthy eating, and stress-free mealtimes. Try it – you won't regret it!

Tips and Tricks:

  • Rice Choice: Experiment with different types of rice to find your favorite.
  • Bag Size: Adjust the bag size according to your needs. Smaller bags are perfect for single servings or smaller meals.
  • Freezing Time: The rice can be stored in the freezer for up to three months.
  • Thawing: For quicker thawing, you can microwave the rice directly in the bag (remove the bag from the freezer about 2-3 hours before you plan to use it and place in the refrigerator). Just be sure to vent the bag.

Step-by-step

    • Cook as directed in rice cooker (or your preferred method).
    • When rice is done immediately rinse, in strainer, with cold water till rice is cool (to stop cooking).
    • Fill ziplock baggies (quart size) with 2 cups of rice each.
    • Flatten out and remove air.
    • Makes 4 bags. (You can do 1 cup bags too ~ Use smaller baggies like sandwich or snack ones)
    • I usually have 1/2 - 1 cup rice leftover which I just make a little dish for myself with.
    • Use one bag for 2 of you ~ Two bags for 4 of you
    • Just take out of the freezer in the morning and throw in the fridge till you start cooking!
