Bourbon Chicken

Bourbon Chicken
I never was convinced there was bourbon in bourbon chicken. I set up a lab experiment in my little kitchen, sample box of mall bourbon chicken, and my own ingredients, all ready for a Food Network style Throwdown (without Bobby Flay). I already had a general plan for what I thought might be in Bourbon Chicken, and then I went to work, chopping, mixing, cooking, tasting, tasting, tasting, and I feel confident I got this done. Side by side taste tests get a thumbs up for my recipe. Note: I used some low calorie ingredients in mine, and if you choose to use full calorie options, be careful not to burn or over sweeten your sauce. You can get ketjap manis in oriental grocery stores. Dont substitute regular soy sauce for it- the flavor and texture is totally different. Or you could try making Recipe 39318, reduced to the thickness of honey. I think the ketjap manis I used must have given it the reddish color, although I hadn't noticed that using it before. Maybe it was the cherry coke? The color wont really matter so dont worry about it.

My Surprisingly Delicious Bourbon Chicken Adventure

As a busy working mom, I’m always on the lookout for quick, easy, and flavorful meals. Recently, I found myself craving that classic mall food court favorite: Bourbon Chicken. However, I've always been a bit skeptical of the name. Where's the bourbon? So, armed with my trusty chef's knife (and a healthy dose of curiosity), I embarked on a culinary experiment. I decided to recreate the dish from scratch, using my own twist and low-calorie ingredients where possible. My goal? To create a healthier, equally delicious version of this beloved dish without sacrificing any of that sweet and savory flavor. The result? A total success!

My journey started with some serious detective work. I began by analyzing a sample of store-bought bourbon chicken, trying to decipher its unique combination of flavors. The initial taste test revealed a surprising depth of sweetness, a hint of smokiness, and the tang of soy sauce. I experimented with various ingredients, trying to recreate the perfect balance of sweet and savory until I finally arrived at a sauce that perfectly replicated my beloved store-bought version. The process itself was surprisingly therapeutic; the rhythmic chopping, the intoxicating aromas filling my kitchen – it was pure culinary joy.

What I discovered through my culinary experiment is that achieving that characteristic bourbon chicken flavor doesn't rely on actual bourbon at all! The key is the artful combination of ingredients. I found that using a combination of a dark, sweet soy sauce (Ketjap Manis), a touch of cherry coke (which adds an unexpected depth of sweetness and subtle fruitiness), a hint of liquid smoke to emulate a smoky undertone, and a healthy amount of brown sugar, I could achieve the deep, rich flavor that defines this iconic dish. My recipe also includes brown sugar and ginger to enhance the sweetness and spiciness and rice vinegar for a subtle tanginess.

One of the things I particularly love about this recipe is its versatility. You can easily adjust the ingredients to suit your taste and dietary needs. Feel free to use regular brown sugar instead of a low-calorie blend or use full-fat coke to further enhance the sweetness. If you're looking for an even more intense flavor, you could try adding a few drops of your favorite bourbon or whiskey, although I personally found the perfect balance without it. And remember, don't be afraid to experiment! The beauty of cooking is in the exploration of flavors.

Beyond the taste, this recipe also offers convenience and speed, vital for a busy life. The chicken cooks quickly, and the sauce comes together in minutes. It's a dish that’s perfect for a weeknight dinner, a casual get-together, or even a quick lunch. But the real joy, the real accomplishment, comes from creating something delicious from scratch, from taking a dish that was once just a comforting memory and transforming it into a culinary masterpiece. The pride I felt when my family devoured the final product was worth the effort. So, ditch the mall food court and try your hand at my Bourbon Chicken recipe. I promise, it's an adventure worth taking.

This recipe is a testament to the power of experimentation and the joy of creating something delicious from simple ingredients. It’s a dish that’s both satisfying and easy to make, making it a perfect addition to any weeknight dinner rotation. Remember, cooking is about more than just following a recipe; it's about the journey, the exploration of flavors, and the satisfaction of creating something delicious for yourself and your loved ones.

Beyond the recipe, I encourage you to explore your own culinary creativity. Try substituting different ingredients, experimenting with spices, and finding what works best for you. The kitchen is your canvas, and the possibilities are endless.
