Great Kielbasa and Northern Bean Soup

Great Kielbasa and Northern Bean Soup
As is the case with anything I cook I always have to take something and make it my own. This is based on North Woods Bean Soup. I wasnt a fan of the baby spinach leaves so my version nixed them and I did a lot more simmering than the original which I think makes a difference but maybe not. I like to simmer things. I doubled the kielbasa and I upped the garlic. I also saute the kielbasa separately before mixing in additional ingredients. I've also made a spicy version using 1/4 teaspoon of Daves Insanity sauce.

Great Kielbasa and Northern Bean Soup

My take on a hearty and flavorful soup: Great Kielbasa and Northern Bean Soup

As a busy mom of three, finding time to cook delicious and nutritious meals can feel like a marathon. But sometimes, the simplest recipes are the most rewarding. This Great Kielbasa and Northern Bean Soup is one of those recipes. It's a hearty, flavorful, and surprisingly easy-to-make meal that's perfect for a chilly evening. I adapted it from an online recipe, tweaking it to suit my own tastes and making it even more comforting.

The original recipe called for baby spinach, which I personally wasn't a fan of, so I left it out. I also increased the simmering time significantly. I find that a longer simmering time allows the flavors to meld beautifully, creating a richer and more complex soup. My family loves the texture of the soup after this prolonged simmering, it becomes creamier and more satisfying.

Another change I made was doubling the amount of kielbasa. Let's be honest, who doesn't love a good kielbasa? And of course, more garlic never hurts. In fact, I've even experimented with adding a pinch of Dave's Insanity Sauce for a spicy kick to the soup. The result is a bowl of comforting warmth that will have everyone asking for seconds, or thirds!

The beauty of this recipe lies in its adaptability. You can easily adjust it based on your preferences and what you have on hand. Want a vegetarian version? Simply omit the kielbasa. Prefer a different type of bean? Go for it! The fundamental flavors of this soup – the savory kielbasa, the sweetness of the carrots and onions, and the heartiness of the beans – will always shine through.

Ingredients:

This soup is incredibly versatile. Feel free to adjust the ingredients to your liking. A little more garlic? Go for it! A different type of sausage? Why not? The core elements will still shine through no matter what you change.

My personal tips:

Don't be afraid to experiment! The original recipe was a great starting point, but I encourage you to adapt it to your own preferences. That's what makes cooking so fun and personal. Try adding different herbs and spices, or using different types of beans. The possibilities are endless!

Serving suggestions:

This soup is absolutely delicious on its own. However, feel free to get creative with serving suggestions. Some of my family's favorites are to serve it with a dollop of sour cream or some crusty bread for dipping. We also love a sprinkling of grated Parmesan cheese before enjoying it.

Conclusion:

This Great Kielbasa and Northern Bean Soup recipe is a staple in our household. It’s a warm and inviting dish that’s perfect for busy weeknights, chilly weekends, or any time you need a comforting and flavorful meal. It is a great addition to your recipe repertoire and something you will want to make again and again. Its ease, flavor and heartiness makes it an excellent choice for families of all sizes, from solo dinners to large gatherings.

Step-by-step

    • Heat a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add kielbasa; saute 3 minutes, stirring occasionally.
    • Add carrots, onion, garlic, and kielbasa to saucepan; saute an additional 3 minutes, stirring occasionally.
    • Reduce heat to medium; cook 5 minutes.
    • Add 4 cups of stock, Italian seasoning, pepper, and beans. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer 25 minutes.
    • I cook the soup longer than the original recipe so an extra cup of stock/broth or even water isnt a terrible idea if the soup is starting to look thicker than it should.
    • Place 2 cups of the soup in a food processor or blender, and process until smooth.
    • Return the pureed mixture to pan. Simmer an additional 25 minutes.
    • Remove soup from heat.
    • Parmesan can be added as topping or mixed into the soup as it cools.
    • If you like a spicy soup add 1/4 teaspoon of Daves Insanity sauce during the final 25 minutes of simmering, itll give the soup a big kick.
