Shortcut Caramel Cinnamon Rolls: A Busy Mom's Sweet Treat

Shortcut Caramel Cinnamon Rolls: A Busy Mom's Sweet Treat

Mornings in our house are a whirlwind. Between getting the kids ready for school, packing lunches, making sure everyone has their homework, and getting myself ready for work, there’s barely a moment to breathe, let alone bake elaborate pastries. But even a busy mom like me deserves a little indulgence, and that’s where these shortcut caramel cinnamon rolls come in. Forget the hours of kneading and proofing; this recipe delivers all the gooey, cinnamon-sugar goodness with minimal fuss. It's become a staple in my household, a quick and easy way to add a touch of sweetness to our hectic mornings or a comforting treat after a long day.

The secret to these rolls lies in using frozen bread dough. It's a game-changer! I usually thaw it overnight in the refrigerator, saving me precious time in the morning. Then, it’s just a matter of rolling it out, spreading the delicious cinnamon-sugar mixture, adding a sprinkle of caramel bits (because why not?), rolling it up, slicing it, and popping it in the oven. While they’re baking, I whip up a simple cream cheese frosting – another shortcut that tastes anything but! The whole process, from thawing to frosting, takes less than an hour. Trust me; it's significantly quicker than making rolls from scratch, and the result is unbelievably delicious.

These cinnamon rolls aren't just for breakfast. They're perfect for a weekend brunch, a cozy afternoon snack, or even a delightful dessert. I’ve served them to friends and family, and they’re always a huge hit. The warm, gooey cinnamon rolls paired with the rich cream cheese frosting is a heavenly combination. The slight crunch from the caramel bits adds another layer of texture and flavor, elevating the entire experience. I often adapt this recipe based on what I have on hand. Sometimes I’ll add chopped nuts or a drizzle of extra caramel sauce. It’s a very versatile recipe and incredibly forgiving!

The beauty of this recipe is its adaptability. Feel free to experiment with different types of sugars, spices, or even add-ins. I've tried adding chopped pecans, macadamia nuts, or even a splash of orange zest for a unique twist. The possibilities are endless! Whether you are a seasoned baker or a complete beginner, these shortcut caramel cinnamon rolls are a must-try. They're quick, easy, and incredibly delicious—the perfect treat for any busy mom (or anyone who appreciates a little shortcut in their life!). Give them a try and let me know what you think!

Ingredients:

16 oz frozen loaf bread dough 1/4 cup sugar 1/4 cup brown sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon 1/4 cup melted butter, cooled 1/2 cup caramel bits 1 1/2 oz cream cheese, softened to room temperature 1 tablespoon butter, softened to room temperature 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons milk (or more, as needed)

Step-by-step

    • Thaw bread dough using the refrigerator method indicated on the package (I let mine thaw in the fridge overnight.)
    • Let dough come to room temperature for 10 minutes then lightly flour a clean, dry surface and roll dough into a 12x8" rectangle.
    • Combine sugars and cinnamon together in a small bowl, then spread melted butter over bread dough, and then sprinkle cinnamon-sugar mixture on top.
    • Sprinkle on caramel bits (if using) then roll dough into a log, pinch seams to close, trim ends off, and then cut into 8 equal slices.
    • Spray a 9" round baking pan very well with nonstick spray then arrange slices inside.
    • Cover with a tea towel sprayed with nonstick spray then let rise until doubled in size, 30-45 minutes, in a warm place (I place the pan on top of a heating pad set to low.)
    • Preheat oven to 350 degrees then place baking pan on a baking sheet and then bake for 20-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
    • Meanwhile, combine cream cheese and butter in a large bowl or in the bowl of an electric mixer.
    • Beat until smooth then slowly mix in powdered sugar.
    • Add vanilla then beat to combine.
    • Add milk 1/2 teaspoon at a time until frosting reaches spreadable consistency. May need up to 2 teaspoons milk.
    • Spread frosting on warm caramel cinnamon rolls then serve immediately.
