Let me tell you a story about a dessert that changed everything – well, at least my standing in the Fil-Am Kiwanis annual Appetizer/Desert Contest! Back in 2010, I entered my Apple Brown Betty, a recipe I'd perfected over years of baking experiments and family gatherings. I never considered myself a professional baker, just a woman who loved to create comforting, heartwarming treats for my loved ones. It's a dish that evokes memories of cozy autumn evenings, the scent of warm spices filling the kitchen, and the sheer joy of sharing something delicious with those you care about. And let me tell you, it's the simplest of pleasures.

The day of the contest was a whirlwind! I remember the nervous energy, the anticipation, and the sheer joy of seeing people enjoy my creation. Winning first place was a surprise, a testament to the power of a good recipe and a touch of love. This Apple Brown Betty isn't just a dessert; it's a story, a legacy – a delicious one at that. It's the culmination of years of baking and tweaking this recipe, resulting in a perfectly balanced blend of sweet, tart, and warm spices.

This recipe is more than just a collection of ingredients; it's a journey. From the careful peeling and chopping of the apples to the delicate crunch of the crisp apple peels on top, every step is a ritual. The aroma of cinnamon, nutmeg, and brown sugar dancing in the air is a promise of the warmth and comfort awaiting. This is not just any dessert; it's a celebration of autumn, of togetherness, and of the simple joy of baking. It’s a dish that brings people together, sharing stories and laughter around a table laden with deliciousness. So, gather your ingredients, preheat your oven, and prepare for a baking experience that will warm your heart and your soul. And don't forget to share a piece (or two!) with your loved ones.

The recipe is straightforward, easy to follow, even for novice bakers. It's a testament to the fact that sometimes, the most simple recipes yield the most incredible results. What makes it special isn't the complexity, but the balance of flavors and textures. The apples are perfectly complemented by the warm spices and the crisp topping, creating a dessert that is both comforting and sophisticated. The beautiful thing is that it’s endlessly adaptable. Feel free to experiment with different types of apples, add a sprinkle of pecans or walnuts to the topping, or even incorporate different spices to create your own unique twist.

Step-by-step

    • Preheat oven to 350.
    • Peel the apples, and reserve the peels.
    • Core and chop up the apples into 1 inch pieces.
    • Put the apples into a large bowl.
    • Add the brown sugar, mace, nutmeg, cinnamon, cranberries and melted butter.
    • Put the raisin bread into a food processor and process into crumbs.
    • Put almost all the crumbs into the bowl.
    • Mix all well.
    • Put into 1 quart casserole dish.
    • Bake for 1 1/2 hours or until apples have softened.
    • Remove from the oven.
    • Heat oil in a frying pan.
    • Dredge the peels in the flour.
    • Fry in oil until they have crisped then remove and dust with sugar and cinnamon.
    • Place on top of Betty for garnish.
    • Serve warm. This is very good with "Red Hot Sauce" and ice cream.
