Fruit Crescents: A Family Recipe for the Holidays

Fruit Crescents: A Taste of Christmas Past

This recipe isn’t just a collection of ingredients and steps; it’s a journey back in time, a nostalgic trip to Christmases past, filled with the aroma of warm spices and the sweet taste of family tradition. My mother, a woman who knew the true meaning of love, expressed it through her baking. Every Christmas, the kitchen would fill with the intoxicating scent of freshly baked goods, the star of the show always being these delightful Fruit Crescents.

The recipe itself is deceptively simple, a testament to the fact that the most extraordinary flavors often arise from humble beginnings. There’s something magical about watching the dough transform from a sticky mass into delicate, flaky crescents. It's a process, not just a recipe, one that requires patience and a touch of love (just like my mother always said!). The chilling step is crucial, a lesson in the art of waiting, which yields a perfectly textured pastry. It is also a reminder that some things are worth the wait, that some flavors are enhanced by the passage of time.

The combination of buttery, flaky pastry, sweet jam, and crunchy nuts creates an explosion of flavors that perfectly captures the spirit of Christmas. And the powdered sugar dusting? Oh, don't even get me started; it's the crowning touch, the final flourish that transforms a simple dessert into a truly unforgettable culinary experience. Each bite is an echo of Christmases spent with family, a reminder of childhood memories, of laughter and love, all encapsulated in one delicious little crescent.

Beyond the deliciousness, these Fruit Crescents are a symbol of heritage and tradition, passed down through generations. They are a link to the past, connecting me to my mother, to her mother, and to all the women who came before us, creating these little crescents to celebrate the holidays. I hope you'll try this recipe, not just for the exquisite taste, but for the story it tells, the memories it evokes, and the tradition it allows you to pass on.

More than just a recipe, this is a time capsule of love, carefully crafted and shared, one crescent at a time. Enjoy!

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • 2 cups flour
  • Confectioners sugar
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 lb butter
  • 1/3 tsp salt
  • 1/2 lb cream cheese (no low-fat stuff!)
  • 1/2 cup chopped raisins
  • 1/2 cup seedless strawberry jam
  • 1 egg yolk, beaten

Step-by-step

    • Cream together butter and cream cheese until smooth.
    • Sift flour and mix with salt and heavy cream.
    • Add the butter/cream cheese mixture to the flour/cream mixture.
    • Dough will be sticky. Divide in half, make balls and flatten between 2 sheets of floured waxed paper.
    • Chill the 2 pieces several hours or overnight.
    • Mix the jam with nuts and raisins.
    • Roll out the flattened dough to thin.
    • Cut into 2-1/2" squares and place a tsp of jam mix on each.
    • Roll up from the corner, twist ends, place on a parchment covered (or silpat) baking sheet and form into a crescent.
    • Brush the top with a bit of egg yolk to brown, and bake at 375 for 15 minutes.
    • Sprinkle with powdered sugar as soon as they come out of the oven.
