Step-by-step

  • Drain the liquid from the tuna cans. If using tuna packed in water, reserve a tablespoon of the tuna water and add a teaspoon of olive oil to the tuna mixture in the next step.
  • In a medium bowl, mix together the tuna, mustard, torn white bread, lemon zest, lemon juice, water, parsley, chives, and hot sauce. Sprinkle on salt and freshly ground black pepper. Taste the mixture before adding the egg to see if it needs more seasoning. Mix in the egg.
  • Divide the mixture into 4 parts. With each part, form into a ball and then flatten into a patty. Place onto a wax paper-lined tray and chill for an hour. (Chilling helps the patties stay together when cooking, but can be skipped.)
  • Heat olive oil and a little butter in a cast iron or stick-free skillet on medium-high. Gently place the patties in the pan and cook until nicely browned, 3-4 minutes on each side.
  • Serve with lemon wedges. Tartar sauce and slider buns can also be used for a tuna burger.

As a busy marketing executive, my days are a whirlwind of meetings, deadlines, and client calls. Finding time to prepare healthy and satisfying meals can feel like an impossible task. I discovered this recipe a few months ago, and it's become a lifesaver. The patties are surprisingly easy to make, requiring minimal effort and only a handful of common ingredients. The best part? They taste remarkably similar to a classic tuna salad sandwich, but with a fun, handheld twist. I love the convenience; I can prepare a batch on Sunday, pop them in the fridge, and grab one each day for lunch. No more midday hunger pangs or rushed trips to grab something unhealthy from a nearby cafe. This recipe has been a game-changer for my lunch routine and my overall well-being. Plus, they're super versatile – I often experiment with adding different herbs or spices to keep things interesting.

I often pair my tuna salad patties with a side salad or some fresh vegetables for a complete and balanced lunch. Sometimes, I add a small serving of fruit for a touch of sweetness. The beauty of this recipe is that it's incredibly adaptable to your preferences and dietary needs. Whether you're a vegetarian looking to add more protein to your diet, or simply someone who wants a quick and easy lunch solution, this recipe offers a satisfying and delicious answer.

Beyond their convenience and delicious taste, these tuna salad patties also have the added benefit of being extremely portable. The possibilities for customizing these patties are endless. Feel free to experiment with different types of tuna, add other vegetables or herbs, or even try using different types of bread. One of my favorite variations involves adding a sprinkle of everything bagel seasoning for an extra layer of flavor. Sometimes, I swap the white bread for whole wheat for added fiber. You could also add finely diced celery or red onion for a crunchier texture. The possibilities are truly limitless!
