Step-by-step

  • Remove giblets from both cavities and set aside. Rinse the bird inside and out and pat dry with paper towel.
  • Place a rack into a large roasting pan, and then place the turkey onto the rack with the breast and legs up.
  • Mix all of the seasonings, except the paprika, together with the butter.
  • Place your hand between the skin and the flesh from the rear of the turkey and slide a palm full of butter and seasoning mixture in between the skin and flesh.
  • Place a glob of butter into the palm of your hand and generously rub the entire turkey with the butter.
  • Generously sprinkle the entire bird with salt, freshly ground black pepper, onion powder, granulated garlic powder, tarragon, parsley flakes, thyme, basil and paprika.
  • Pour about 1/4" to 1/2" of chicken broth in the bottom of the roasting pan, being careful not to wash any of the seasonings off the turkey.
  • Completely tent the turkey with aluminum foil and place into a preheated 325 degree oven for about 1 1/2 hours.
  • Remove the foil tent and wrap foil around the legs and wings.
  • Baste the turkey and return it to the oven for the remainder of the cooking time, which will be when the interior temperature of the bird reaches 180 degrees or until the juices run clear and not red when you puncture the bird between the thigh and the breast. Cooking time will vary depending on the size of the turkey.
  • During the last 10 or 15 minutes of cooking, increase temperature to 375 or 400 degrees F. to get more browning, but watch it carefully, as you do not want to burn it or dry it out.

My Perfect Roast Turkey: A Thanksgiving Tradition

Thanksgiving. The word itself conjures images of family gathered around a table laden with delicious food, the aroma of warm spices filling the air, and the centerpiece of it all: a perfectly roasted turkey. For years, I've been perfecting my Thanksgiving turkey recipe, and I'm so excited to share my secret to juicy, flavorful, and absolutely stunning roast turkey with you.

It's more than just a recipe; it's a tradition. The careful preparation, the anticipation of the rich golden-brown skin, the satisfying crackle as the knife slices through – these are the moments that create lasting memories. This recipe isn't just about the perfect bird; it's about the love and care poured into creating a special meal for those you cherish. I always remember my grandmother's kitchen, filled with the comforting scent of roasting turkey and the joyful chatter of family. Now, I carry on that tradition, adapting her techniques and adding my own personal touches to ensure the turkey is always the star of the show.

Beyond the Basics: Why This Recipe Works

What sets this recipe apart? It's all about the details. The careful layering of seasonings under the skin ensures that the turkey is bursting with flavor from the inside out. Using real butter, generously applied both under the skin and over the top, creates that coveted crispy skin and keeps the meat incredibly moist. The addition of chicken broth to the roasting pan prevents the turkey from drying out and adds another layer of flavor to the overall dish. And finally, a quick increase in oven temperature at the end ensures a beautifully browned and finished turkey.

This recipe is adaptable to any size turkey, so don’t be afraid to experiment. The key is to monitor the internal temperature of the bird with a meat thermometer, ensuring that it reaches 180 degrees before serving. I also strongly recommend cooking your stuffing separately, as this ensures it’s cooked evenly and prevents the turkey from becoming overly moist. This turkey is a testament to the importance of simple ingredients handled with care and attention. Every step, from preparing the turkey to basting it in the oven, represents a small act of love that culminates in a truly extraordinary meal.

Serving Suggestions

Once your magnificent turkey is ready, the possibilities for serving are endless. Classic sides like mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and green bean casserole are always a hit. But don't be afraid to get creative! Roasted root vegetables, a vibrant salad, or even a unique twist on a traditional side dish can elevate your Thanksgiving feast to new heights. No matter how you choose to serve it, this roast turkey recipe is guaranteed to impress your family and friends.

Memories Made Around the Table

More than just a meal, this roast turkey is a symbol of gathering, of sharing, and of creating lasting memories. It's the heart of the Thanksgiving table, bringing loved ones together to celebrate all that we have to be grateful for. So, gather your ingredients, put on some festive music, and prepare to create a Thanksgiving masterpiece. This isn’t just about cooking a turkey; it’s about creating a tradition, a moment in time that will be cherished long after the last slice is gone.

Happy Thanksgiving!
