  • Total Time: 30 minutes

Step-by-step

  • Mix the berbere spice mix really well. Preferably also add 1/8 tsp ground ajwain(carom seeds) and ground kalongi (nigella seeds).
  • Drain the chickpeas and transfer to a bowl. Add to the bowl, all of the berbere spice blend or 1 to 1.5 tbsp pre made blend. You can also use 1 to 1.5 tbsp pre made shawarma blend or garam masala.
  • Add garlic, onion, salt and olive oil to the chickpeas and toss well to coat. Set aside.
  • Make the tahini sauce, thin it out to preference.
  • Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F / 220°c. Shape the pizza crust. Spread the crust to about 14 inch size to make a thin crust large pizza. Brush with olive oil.
  • Place sliced tomatoes on top. Add the spiced chickpeas in a single layer. (You can also add some greens or pepper as toppings).
  • Place sliced onions on top. Drizzle some of the tahini garlic sauce.
  • Bake for 18 minutes.
  • Garnish with cilantro or parsley. Drizzle some more tahini sauce, slice and serve. You can also use vegan ranch, vegan mozzarella (add before baking) or other creamy dressing or just lemon juice to dress.

Ethiopian Berbere Chickpea Pizza: A Flavorful Vegan Delight

As a busy working mom, finding time to cook healthy and delicious meals can be a challenge. Weeknights often mean juggling work deadlines, school pick-ups, and homework help, leaving little energy for elaborate culinary creations. That’s why I’ve fallen in love with recipes that are both quick and impressive, like this Ethiopian Berbere Chickpea Pizza. It's a vibrant, flavorful explosion in every bite, and best of all, it's surprisingly easy to make.

The star of this pizza is undoubtedly the berbere spice blend. This Ethiopian staple brings a warmth and complexity that elevates the simple chickpeas to a whole new level. I love the earthy notes and subtle hints of heat – it’s the perfect balance of spice and savoriness. And the best part? You don't need to be a spice expert to make it work. A pre-made berbere blend from your local spice shop works perfectly, or you can easily adjust the spices to your own liking. I often add a pinch of ajwain and kalongi for an extra aromatic kick, but it's totally optional.

The chickpeas themselves are incredibly versatile. I use a can of chickpeas, making the prep work minimal, and simply toss them with the berbere spice blend, garlic, onion, and olive oil. It’s a quick process that infuses them with incredible flavor. The tahini garlic dressing is the perfect complement to the spicy chickpeas. Creamy, tangy, and slightly garlicky, it cuts through the spices beautifully, providing a cooling contrast. I often make a big batch of the dressing and keep it in the refrigerator for salads or as a dip for vegetables. And of course, feel free to experiment! A vegan ranch or even a simple squeeze of lemon juice would be equally delicious.

This pizza is incredibly adaptable. I’ve used a store-bought gluten-free crust to make it easier, but you can easily make your own if you have the time. You can also add your favorite toppings – fresh spinach, bell peppers, or even some vegan mozzarella cheese would be wonderful additions. The key is to keep it simple and let the amazing flavors of the berbere spice and tahini dressing shine.

This recipe is more than just a pizza; it's a celebration of flavors. It’s a testament to how simple ingredients, combined with a little creativity and a dash of spice, can transform a weeknight meal into a truly memorable culinary experience. So, the next time you’re looking for a quick, healthy, and flavorful meal that will impress your family and friends, give this Ethiopian Berbere Chickpea Pizza a try. You won't be disappointed.
