Step-by-step

  • Cook brown rice according to your preference, I use a Japanese rice cooker.
  • In a large nonstick pan, warm sesame oil over low-medium heat. Add chicken and brown on all sides. (Doesn't have to be fully cooked yet.)
  • Add the ginger, garlic, spice sauce, orange juice, and soy sauce. Stir well and bring to a simmer.
  • Simmer on low heat for 3-5 minutes, or until sauce has reduced and thickened. Stir well and remove from heat.
  • Meanwhile, fill a pot with 1 inch of water. Add steamer basket and add chopped broccoli florets & stems. Cover and steam for 4 minutes.
  • Make the bowls by either dividing the brown rice among four bowls and topping with chicken and broccoli, or by mixing it all together in the nonstick pan. Top with sesame seeds and enjoy!

Beyond its speed and ease, this recipe offers a delicious and healthy alternative to takeout. Instead of relying on processed ingredients and high sodium levels, this recipe uses fresh, wholesome ingredients, allowing you to control the flavor and nutritional value of your meal. The bright citrus notes from the orange juice add a refreshing twist to the familiar flavors of Asian cuisine, making it a unique and exciting dish for the whole family.

I love how versatile this recipe is. You can easily adjust the spice level to your preference, adding more or less red pepper flakes depending on your tolerance for heat. Feel free to experiment with different vegetables as well – snow peas, carrots, or bell peppers would all be delicious additions. If you're not a fan of broccoli, you can substitute it with your favorite greens.

Beyond the bowl:

This recipe isn't just limited to rice bowls. You can easily adapt it to create other delicious dishes. The chicken and orange sauce would be amazing served over quinoa, noodles, or even as a filling for lettuce wraps. The possibilities are endless!

Tips for success:

  • Use fresh ingredients: The quality of your ingredients will greatly impact the flavor of the dish. Use fresh ginger and garlic for the best results.
  • Don't overcook the chicken: Overcooked chicken can be dry and tough. Make sure to cook it just until it's browned and cooked through.
  • Adjust the sauce to your taste: If you prefer a sweeter sauce, add a little more orange juice or honey. If you want a spicier sauce, add more red pepper flakes.
  • Make it ahead: This recipe can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Simply reheat before serving.

This Orange Ground Chicken Rice Bowl recipe is a testament to the fact that healthy and delicious meals don't have to be complicated or time-consuming. It's a perfect example of how simple ingredients, combined with a touch of creativity, can create a truly unforgettable culinary experience.
