Step-by-step

  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda and salt for 30 seconds, set aside.
  • In the bowl of an electric stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, whip butter, granulated sugar and brown sugar on medium-high speed until pale and fluffy, about 3 - 4 minutes.
  • Add in eggs one at a time, mixing until combined after each addition and adding vanilla in with second egg.
  • With mixer set on low speed, slowly add in dry ingredients and mix just until combined.
  • Stir in chocolate chips.
  • Transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate 2 hours.
  • Meanwhile, line a baking sheet with wax paper and dollop 1 1/2 tsp of Nutella at a time onto lined baking sheet into individual little mounds, repeat until you have made 30.
  • Transfer to freezer and freeze 1 hour.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • To assemble and bake cookies, remove dough from refrigerator and scoop dough out about 2 Tbsp at a time and shape into balls.
  • Remove about 4 nutella dollops from the freezer at a time (so the Nutella doesn't soften at room temperature, you want it to stay firm as it's much easier to work with this way) and using your thumbs make an indentation in the center of the dough ball, large enough to fit a Nutella dollop (so it should look similar to a bowl).
  • Take frozen Nutella and place it in the center of the indentation, then wrap and press cookie dough around Nutella to cover entirely (so the Nutella doesn't seep out while baking).
  • Transfer prepared cookie dough balls to a Silpat lined (or buttered) baking sheet and bake in preheated oven 9 - 12 minutes.
  • Remove from oven and sprinkle tops lightly with sea salt if desired.
  • Allow to cool several minutes on baking sheet before transferring to a wire rack to cool.
  • Store in an airtight container.
  • For a more richly chocolate cookie you can increase the cocoa powder up to an additional 1/4 cup, then reduce the flour by that same amount (so if you add 2 additional Tbsp cocoa reduce the flour by 2 Tbsp).
  • I set aside some of the chocolate chips to press into the tops of the cookies just before baking, probably about 1/2 cup, because I like to have some of the chocolate chips showing. It's optional, if you don't care to have some of the chocolate chips showing then just mix all of them in.

My Unexpected Nutella Adventure: A Chocolate Chip Cookie Saga

As a busy working mom, finding time for anything beyond work and family feels like winning the lottery. Baking? That's usually relegated to the "someday" pile. But this week, something shifted. Maybe it was the promise of a quiet evening, or maybe it was the irresistible siren call of a jar of Nutella sitting on my kitchen counter. Whatever the reason, I found myself diving headfirst into the wonderfully messy world of Nutella-stuffed chocolate chip cookies.

The recipe, a treasure I stumbled upon online (I won't link it here, to respect the original creator’s work), promised a decadent treat that combined the familiar comfort of chocolate chip cookies with the rich, hazelnutty surprise of Nutella. Intrigued, I gathered my ingredients – butter softened to perfection (a crucial step, I learned!), brown and granulated sugar, a generous helping of cocoa powder, chocolate chips of both the semi-sweet and milk chocolate varieties, and of course, the star of the show: Nutella. I followed the instructions meticulously, mesmerized by the way the dough came together, smelling the sweet aroma of baking chocolate and butter filling my kitchen.

The process itself was surprisingly therapeutic. The rhythmic whisking, the precise measuring, the careful shaping of the dough around the frozen Nutella centers – it was a welcome break from the usual chaos of my day. There’s something deeply satisfying about creating something delicious with your own two hands. The anticipation mounted as the cookies baked in the oven, filling my home with an even more intense aroma that promised chocolatey goodness. I admit, a few cookies were sacrificed to the "quality control" process. Warm from the oven, these were divine.

Beyond the Recipe: A Reflection on Simple Pleasures

This cookie-baking experience wasn't just about the delicious outcome; it was about reconnecting with a simpler time, a time when the act of making something with my own hands brought me joy. In our busy lives, filled with emails, meetings, deadlines, and to-do lists, we often forget the simple pleasures. The simple act of making cookies—of measuring ingredients, mixing them, shaping them, and baking them—is a meditative process. It's a break from the digital world and a way to reconnect with our inner selves. And the result, warm, delicious cookies, is a tangible reward for the time invested.

These cookies weren't just a sweet treat; they were a reminder to pause, to savor the moments, and to enjoy the simple things in life. They became a symbol of balance, a way to blend my busy life with small moments of intentional joy. More than that, they sparked a conversation with my family. My children excitedly joined me in assembling the cookies, the kitchen filled with laughter and flour dust. It was a small moment, a shared experience, a cherished memory baked into every bite.

So, if you’re looking for a project that’s both delicious and relaxing, I highly recommend these Nutella-stuffed chocolate chip cookies. They’re more than just cookies; they're a small piece of joy, a tangible reminder that even in the midst of chaos, there's always time for a little bit of sweetness. And don't be afraid to get a little messy! The best memories (and the best cookies) are often made in the midst of a delightful kitchen disaster.

Tips and Variations:

While the original recipe is perfect, feel free to experiment! Here are a few ideas:

  • Add nuts: Chopped pecans or walnuts would add a wonderful textural contrast to the cookies.
  • Change the chocolate: Use dark chocolate chips for a more intense chocolate flavor, or white chocolate chips for a sweeter taste.
  • Experiment with fillings: Instead of Nutella, try other spreads like peanut butter or caramel.
  • Decorate your cookies: Use sprinkles, chocolate shavings, or even a drizzle of melted chocolate to add extra flair.

No matter how you choose to make them, these Nutella-stuffed chocolate chip cookies are sure to become a new family favorite. Happy baking!
