Step-by-step

  • If making my barbecue sauce (recommended!!) then simply combine the "5 minute smoky barbecue sauce" ingredients in a small bowl until smooth. Now, try not to eat it all with a spoon. It tastes even better after sitting in the fridge overnight, so make it the day before the burgers if possible. You will only need ½ cup + 2 tablespoons of the sauce for the burgers, reserve the rest for topping the burgers with.
  • Next, cook your sweet potato whole (with skin on) either by roasting it at 400 degrees (fahrenheit, 205 degrees celsius) until super soft or cook it in the microwave. Steaming or boiling is not recommended, as too much water will get in the potatoes. Let it cool some before peeling off the skin and mash it completely with a fork. Measure out 1 cup fully filled (no gaps) mashed sweet potato.
  • Drain and rinse your chickpeas and pat dry. Add them to a large bowl and mash completely with a fork to where no visible whole chickpeas remain. Add the cooled potato to the chickpeas to the potatoes.
  • Add the barbecue sauce (only ½ cup + 2 tablespoons), cornmeal, salt and chili powder (if using) to the mix and stir until combined and thick. Taste and add any more salt if needed or spice. Place in the fridge for 20 minutes to firm up some.
  • Preheat an oven to 375 degrees and line a sheet pan with parchment paper. Form the mixture into patties using a ½ cup measuring cup. You will get 5 burgers this way. If you want them more slider size, use a ⅛ cup. The mixture should be fairly easy to form into patties with your hands. Flatten them to about ½ inch.
  • Bake for 30 minutes on the first side. It will take this long to cook before you will be able to flip them. Remove and you must flip them carefully using a metal spatula. Using a spatula should make it fairly easy to slide it underneath the burgers. They should have started to form a cooked bottom. It they are sticking too much, cook them a few minutes longer until they come up better. After flipped, cook 10-15 more minutes until they have a nice golden brown top. The longer you cook them, the crispier the exterior will be. Let them cool 10 minutes to firm up some before eating.
  • Layer your burgers with avocado, tomatoes, extra barbecue sauce, lettuce or any toppings you desire!

My Smoky Sweet Potato and Chickpea Burger Journey

For years, I’ve been on a quest for the perfect burger. Not just any burger, but a burger that’s both delicious and healthy. I've always loved the smoky, tangy flavor of barbecue, but traditional burgers often left me feeling heavy and sluggish. I knew there had to be a better way, a way to satisfy my burger cravings without compromising my health goals. My journey began with experimentation – countless failed attempts, countless hours spent in the kitchen, and even more countless taste tests (which were surprisingly enjoyable!). But persistence paid off. The recipe I'm sharing today is the culmination of all that effort, the perfect balance of smoky flavor, hearty texture, and wholesome goodness.

The inspiration for this particular burger came from an unexpected source: a trip to my grandmother’s garden. Surrounded by lush rows of sweet potatoes, I suddenly realised their potential. Their natural sweetness would complement the smoky barbecue sauce perfectly, and their texture would add a lovely earthiness to the patties. Then came the chickpeas – a nutritional powerhouse that provides a fantastic binding agent and adds a satisfying protein boost. I combined these two key ingredients, threw in some spices, and let my creativity run wild. The result? A burger so good, it rivals the best takeout spots, but with the added benefit of being entirely home-made and tailored to my needs.

Beyond the Recipe: A Taste of Home

This isn't just a recipe; it's a reflection of my culinary journey. It's about finding ways to enjoy my favorite foods without sacrificing my well-being. It's about bringing the flavors of home to the table, even when I'm using ingredients that are a bit unexpected. I love the simplicity of this burger, its adaptability, and the way it brings people together. It's perfect for a casual weeknight meal, a backyard barbecue, or even a fancy dinner party (because let's be honest, who doesn't love a good burger?).

Tips and Tricks for Burger Perfection

One of the things that makes this recipe so special is its versatility. Feel free to experiment with different toppings. I personally love adding avocado, juicy tomatoes, crisp lettuce, and a generous drizzle of extra barbecue sauce. But you can also get creative with other options such as caramelized onions, spicy jalapeños, or even a dollop of creamy vegan cheese. The possibilities are endless!

Another key to success is making sure your sweet potatoes are perfectly cooked. Roasting or microwaving them brings out their natural sweetness and ensures a smooth, creamy texture. Avoid boiling or steaming, as excess water can make the patties too watery and difficult to form. And finally, don't be afraid to adjust the seasonings to your liking. If you prefer a spicier burger, add more chili powder. If you want a sweeter burger, add a touch more maple syrup.

More than just a Burger – It’s a Statement

Making these burgers is more than just cooking; it’s a statement about my values. I believe in eating wholesome, nourishing food that tastes amazing. I believe in enjoying life's simple pleasures, and good food is definitely one of them. These burgers represent that belief, a delicious culmination of my culinary explorations and a commitment to living a healthy, happy life. I invite you to join me on this flavorful journey, to embark on your own culinary adventures, and to discover the joy of creating delicious and nutritious meals that nourish your body and soul.
