Step-by-step

  • Pre-heat oven to 425 degrees or 400 convection with rack in center of oven.
  • In the bowl of a stand mixer, or a large mixing bowl, place cut butter. Mix on low until butter is broken up.
  • With the mixer on low, add sugars. Blend until there are no visible chunks of butter, about 1 minute on low or medium low.
  • Add eggs and mix until smooth on low or medium low.
  • Stop mixer and add flour, cornstarch, oats, baking soda, salt and cinnamon. Pulse the mixer until the wet and dry ingredients are incorporated. This will take about 10 pulses of the mixer (quick on -off motion).
  • Then mix on low until the flour disappears.
  • Mix the raisins in using the pulse motion again.
  • Using a kitchen scale, measure out 6 oz portions, do not compact the dough or use a cookie scoop, the cookie is meant to have a rough shape!
  • Stack the cookie high so it will still be thick after baking.
  • Place the cookies on a cookie sheet or jelly roll pan 4-5 per sheet.
  • Bake for 6-7 minutes or until the cookie is barely set and golden on top.
  • Remove from oven and let sit for at least 30-60 minutes to allow the cookie to set up.

My Levain Bakery Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Journey: A Baker's Tale

As a busy professional woman, juggling work deadlines, social events, and the occasional spontaneous weekend getaway, finding time for baking can feel like a luxury. Yet, there's something incredibly therapeutic about the process—the rhythmic mixing, the comforting aroma of warm spices, the anticipation of the final product. This time, my adventure took me to the world of Levain Bakery's famous Oatmeal Raisin Cookies, a recipe that promised a challenge and a reward in equal measure.

The recipe itself, while not overly complicated, demanded precision. The instructions were clear, but the emphasis on "rough shape" and the specific weight of each cookie were intriguing. I've always been a meticulous baker, striving for uniformity, but this recipe demanded a departure from my usual methods. I measured out the ingredients, carefully following the ratios, and felt a sense of calm as I mixed the wet and dry ingredients. The fragrance that filled my kitchen was enough to lift my spirits after a particularly stressful day. The process of creating those oversized cookies, each weighing a precise six ounces, was surprisingly relaxing, the perfect counterpoint to the demands of my busy life.

The moment of truth arrived as I carefully slid the tray into the preheated oven. The anticipation was palpable. Six to seven minutes is a remarkably short time for a cookie, I thought, almost too short. But I trusted the recipe and followed the instructions to the letter. When the cookies emerged, their tops were a perfect golden brown, their edges crisp, their centers soft and chewy. They looked less like "cookies" and more like little, rustic cakes.

The cooling period was the hardest part. I resisted the urge to sneak a bite, knowing that the texture would not be at its best. Waiting that thirty to sixty minutes was an exercise in patience, a moment of reflection amidst the chaos. But when I finally broke off a piece, the experience was pure bliss. The chewy texture, the warm spices, the generous amount of raisins — it was everything I'd hoped for and more. The taste was a perfect blend of sweet, chewy, and comforting.

This experience reminded me that sometimes, the most rewarding things are those that require a bit of effort, a bit of patience, a slight deviation from our usual methods. Baking these cookies was a journey, not just a task. It was a reminder to embrace the unexpected, to trust the process, and to savour the simple pleasures of life, one delicious, oversized oatmeal raisin cookie at a time.

The oversized cookies were a huge hit with everyone. The texture was perfectly chewy, and the balance of sweet and spicy was just right. They tasted as amazing as they looked. My colleagues and clients were so impressed by the unique taste and texture of the cookies that I even got a few requests to bake them again!

Now, I'm excited to explore other baking adventures, but the memory of this baking journey is something special. It's a reminder that even in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, there is always time for moments of simple joy. And for me, those moments often involve a warm oven, a well-loved recipe, and the sweet aroma of freshly baked goods.

I believe that everyone has their own story to tell. My story is a story of a busy professional who takes a break from her hectic schedule to enjoy the simpler things in life. And in this case, that simpler thing is baking these amazing, oversized oatmeal raisin cookies.
