Step-by-step

  • Preheat fryer or oil in a deep skillet to 350 degrees F.
  • Brown ground pork with shredded cabbage and green onion in a large skillet with coconut aminos, garlic, ginger, 5-spice and salt.
  • Cook until meat is cooked through and cabbage is tender.
  • Remove filling from heat.
  • Lay one slice prosciutto on sushi mat (or parchment paper) lying vertical.
  • Place 2 halves of the prosciutto in the middle portion of the prosciutto horizontal to make sealed edges on the egg rolls.
  • Spoon about 3-4 tablespoons of the filling into the center.
  • Fold in the ½ pieces for the edges.
  • Tightly roll up the long piece of prosciutto starting at the edge closest to you until rolled into a tight egg roll shape.
  • NOTE: if the prosciutto rips, it is ok. It will seal when you fry it.
  • Repeat until all are filled.
  • Working in batches fry the egg rolls by placing the tightly wrapped roll seam side down into the hot oil for about 2 minutes or until crisp on the outside.
  • Remove from oil and serve.
  • SWEET n SOUR SAUCE: Heat the ingredients in a small saucepan until simmering. Whisk until smooth. If you want a thicker sauce, add ½ tsp guar gum.
  • OIL TIP: Once cool, strain the oil and store in mason jars in the fridge for future use.

Paleo Egg Rolls: A Culinary Adventure

As a busy professional woman, finding time to cook healthy and delicious meals can often feel like a Herculean task. Between meetings, deadlines, and the endless to-do list, the last thing I want is to spend hours in the kitchen. But my commitment to a healthy, paleo lifestyle remains firm. That's why I love recipes that are both quick and nutritious, like these Paleo Egg Rolls. They’re a fantastic way to enjoy a satisfying meal without sacrificing flavour or health.

The beauty of this recipe lies in its simplicity and adaptability. The filling can be customized to your liking; feel free to experiment with different vegetables, meats, or spices. I often add finely diced bell peppers or mushrooms for extra flavor and texture. The crispy prosciutto exterior adds a wonderful savory depth that perfectly complements the savory filling. And let's not forget the sweet and tangy homemade sweet and sour sauce – the perfect finishing touch!

Preparing these egg rolls is a wonderfully therapeutic process. The methodical rolling and folding are a calming counterpoint to the often chaotic rhythm of my workday. The satisfying crunch of the finished product is a reward for the effort, a small moment of indulgence amidst the demands of a busy life. It's a reminder that even in the midst of a hectic schedule, there's always time to nourish oneself, both physically and mentally. Plus, the leftovers make for a fantastic lunch the next day!

The ingredients are easily sourced from most grocery stores, making this recipe highly accessible. I often purchase my prosciutto from a local butcher, ensuring the highest quality meat. The use of coconut aminos provides a delicious umami flavour without the artificial ingredients often found in soy sauce. The careful balance of spices creates a complex and subtly sweet flavour profile that keeps me coming back for more. The combination of the crispy exterior and the flavorful, tender filling is simply divine.

Beyond the deliciousness, I appreciate the nutritional benefits of this recipe. Paleo eating is all about focusing on whole, unprocessed foods, and these egg rolls adhere perfectly to those principles. The ground pork provides a good source of protein, while the cabbage adds essential vitamins and fiber. It's a complete and satisfying meal that keeps me energized throughout my workday. I often find myself making a large batch on the weekend and storing them in the fridge for quick and easy lunches throughout the week.

These Paleo Egg Rolls are more than just a recipe; they're a testament to the possibility of combining healthy eating with a busy lifestyle. They’re a celebration of flavour, convenience, and the art of finding moments of peace and nourishment in the midst of life's demands. This is a recipe I highly recommend for anyone looking for a delicious, healthy, and convenient meal option – whether you’re a busy professional, a stay-at-home mom, or simply someone who appreciates flavorful and nutritious food.
