Step-by-step

  • Place 4 slices of the bread on a large clean work surface.
  • Layer 1/8 cup of cheese, 1/4 of the salmon, a pinch of the lemon zest and dill, and then another 1/8 of cheese on each slice of bread (basically dividing everything in 4 among the slices of bread), then top each with another slice of bread.
  • Melt two tablespoons of the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sandwiches, two at a time, and cook until the cheese has melted and the bread is golden brown, about 3 minutes per side.
  • Repeat for all of the sandwiches, adding more butter to the pan as needed.
  • Cut in half and serve at once.

I've been on a bit of a grilled cheese kick lately. I love how easy they are to make, and how versatile they can be. This recipe for Smoked Salmon & Gruyere Grilled Cheese is a new favorite of mine. It's got all the classic flavors of a grilled cheese, with the added smokiness of the salmon and the nutty flavor of the Gruyere cheese. Plus, it's super easy to make!

To make this sandwich, you'll need:

  • 8 slices of bread (I used rye bread, but you can use whatever type of bread you like)
  • 8 ounces of smoked salmon
  • 1 cup of grated Gruyere cheese
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon zest
  • 2 tablespoons of chopped fresh dill
  • 4 tablespoons of butter, for greasing the pan

Once you have all of your ingredients, you're ready to start making the sandwiches. First, place 4 slices of bread on a large clean work surface. Then, layer 1/8 cup of cheese, 1/4 of the salmon, a pinch of the lemon zest and dill, and then another 1/8 of cheese on each slice of bread. Finally, top each slice of bread with another slice of bread.

Now, melt two tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Once the butter is melted, add the sandwiches to the skillet and cook until the cheese is melted and the bread is golden brown, about 3 minutes per side. Once the sandwiches are cooked, cut them in half and serve immediately. Enjoy!
