Step-by-step

  • Mix a little sugar into the warm water.
  • Sprinkle yeast on top.
  • Wait for 10 minutes or until it gets all foamy.
  • Pour into a large bowl.
  • Add flour, salt, olive oil.
  • Combine.
  • Knead for 6-8 minutes until you have a moderately stiff dough that is smooth and elastic (add a bit more flour if you need to).
  • Cover and let rest for 20-30 minutes.
  • Lightly grease two 12-inch pizza pans.
  • Sprinkle with a little bit of cornmeal.
  • Divide dough in half.
  • Place each half on a pizza pan and pat it with your fingers until it stretches over the whole pan.
  • Try to make it thicker around the edge.
  • If desired, pre-bake at 425 F for 10 minutes (I don't always do this).
  • Then spread with pizza sauce and use the toppings of your choice.
  • Bake at 425 F for 10-20 minutes longer or until bubbly and hot.
  • Makes 2 12-inch pizzas.
  • If you don't want to use all the dough, you can freeze it. Take a portion of dough, form into a ball, rub olive oil over it and place it in a freezer bag (the oil makes it easier to take out of the bag). When you want to make a pizza, take dough out of freezer and allow to thaw before using.
My Go-To Thin Crust Pizza Dough Recipe

The Easiest Thin Crust Pizza Dough

As a busy working mom, time is my most precious commodity. Weeknights are a whirlwind of homework, soccer practice, and the ever-present struggle to get a healthy and delicious dinner on the table. That’s why I’ve perfected this simple, foolproof recipe for thin crust pizza dough. It’s quick, easy, and delivers a crispy, flavorful crust every single time. Forget takeout – this recipe lets you whip up homemade pizza in a fraction of the time it takes for delivery, and it's so much more satisfying!

I stumbled upon this recipe years ago, during one of those chaotic “orphan recipe adoption” events online. (I’m a bit of a culinary scavenger, always on the lookout for time-saving techniques). This pizza dough recipe quickly became a staple in our home. It's incredibly versatile; you can use it for classic pepperoni pizzas, veggie-loaded feasts, or even gourmet creations with fresh mozzarella and basil. The best part? It’s so easy to customize! Feel free to experiment with different toppings, cheeses, and sauces. Let your creativity shine!

Why This Recipe Works:

This isn’t your grandmother’s pizza dough. This recipe prioritizes speed and simplicity without sacrificing flavor or texture. The dough is wonderfully pliable, making it easy to stretch and shape, even for beginner pizza makers. The thin crust cooks quickly and crisps up beautifully in the oven. And the leftover dough? Freezing it is a breeze. Simply form it into balls, brush them with a bit of olive oil to prevent sticking, and store them in freezer bags. This allows you to have homemade pizza dough ready whenever the pizza craving strikes!

Beyond the Basics: Tips and Tricks

While this recipe is remarkably straightforward, a few small tweaks can elevate your pizza experience. Here are a couple of my favorite tips:

  • Flour Power: The recipe calls for all-purpose flour, but don’t hesitate to experiment! Substituting half or even all of the flour with whole wheat flour adds a nutty flavor and a boost of nutrients. Just keep in mind that whole wheat flour can make the dough slightly less elastic. If this happens, just add a tablespoon or two more all-purpose flour until you reach the desired consistency.
  • Olive Oil Enrichment: The olive oil adds moisture and flavor to the dough. A high-quality olive oil is worth the investment and will make a real difference in the taste of your final product.
  • Pre-Baking Perfection: I often pre-bake the crust for 10 minutes before adding toppings. This helps to ensure a crispy crust and prevents a soggy bottom. But I’m all about flexibility; if you’re short on time, this step is entirely optional.
  • Toppings Galore: The best part of making pizza at home is the endless possibilities when it comes to toppings! Get creative. Try different cheeses, fresh vegetables, meats, or even gourmet toppings like roasted peppers or artichoke hearts.
  • Cornmeal Crunch: Sprinkling a little cornmeal on the pizza pan adds a pleasant textural element to the bottom of the crust, plus it prevents sticking. A small detail, but it makes a difference.

Making Pizza Night a Family Affair

This recipe isn't just about quick and easy pizza; it's also a great way to spend quality time with your family. Get the kids involved in the pizza-making process! Let them help measure ingredients, knead the dough (it's a surprisingly good workout!), and choose their favorite toppings. It's a fun and memorable way to create a delicious meal together.

Homemade pizza isn't just a meal; it's an experience. And with this simple recipe, that experience is easier and more delicious than ever. Give it a try, and I promise you won't be disappointed! Happy pizza making!
