Step-by-step

  • In a large pot boil chicken in chicken stock or add 8 chicken boullion cubes and parsley, onion, and celery to water to add some flavor. When done, take chicken out and shred and return to pot.
  • Dumplings: In a large bowl, sift dry ingredients. Add egg, melted butter and enough milk to make a moist stiff batter. Drop by small teaspoons into the boiling chicken stock. Reduce heat, cover tightly and cook 18 minutes.
  • Some people like to eat like a stew in a bowl, but we like them with mashed potatoes and a vegetable. The stock thickens to make gravy for the potatoes. Enjoy!
  • Just an added note: AFTER the dumplings have cooked, I recently added a can of cream of mushroom soup mixed with a packet of McCormick's chicken gravy. (Make sure you wait until the dumplings are done.) I gently added it between the dumplings. Stir gently and it made the creamiest gravy we have ever had. My husband and grandson just raved that this was the best chicken and dumplings I had ever made.

A Taste of Home: My Grandma's Chicken and Dumplings

The aroma of simmering chicken, fluffy dumplings, and rich gravy—it's a scent that instantly transports me back to my childhood. My grandma's chicken and dumplings weren't just a meal; they were a warm hug on a chilly evening, a comforting presence after a long day, a celebration of family gathered around the table. This recipe, passed down through generations, isn't just about ingredients; it's about love, tradition, and the simple joy of sharing a delicious meal with those you cherish.

I remember vividly the first time I attempted this recipe. I was twenty-one years old, newly independent, and desperately missing the familiar comfort of my grandma's cooking. Armed with her handwritten recipe card, a bit of trepidation, and a whole lot of love, I set out to recreate the magic in my own kitchen. It wasn't perfect the first time; the dumplings were a bit dense, the gravy slightly thin. But the taste, that familiar, comforting taste, was there, reminding me of home and the unwavering love that had nurtured me.

Over the years, this recipe has become a staple in my own kitchen. My children have grown up enjoying the same comforting meal that I did, and now, it's my grandchildren's turn to revel in the fluffy dumplings and savory gravy. Each bite is more than just sustenance; it's a connection to our shared history, a symbol of family traditions and bonds that extend through time.

The beauty of this recipe lies in its simplicity. The ingredients are readily available, and the method is straightforward. Yet, within this apparent simplicity lies the secret to its success: it's the love and care poured into each step, the attention to detail that elevates it beyond an ordinary meal.

It's more than just cooking; it's creating memories. It's about the laughter around the table, the stories shared, the connection forged over a steaming bowl of chicken and dumplings. These aren't just dumplings; they are little clouds of comfort, infused with the warmth of family and tradition. Every bite evokes a sense of nostalgia, a reminder of simpler times and the enduring power of family bonds.

It's a recipe that continues to evolve with each generation, yet remains true to its core. I've made subtle tweaks over the years, incorporating new ingredients, adjusting seasonings to suit my taste, but the heart of the recipe remains the same. The essential ingredients haven’t changed, but the joy they bring to those I love never ceases to amaze me. It's an ever-evolving legacy, shared and perfected with each passing generation. And that, more than anything, is what makes this recipe so special.

So, gather your family, roll up your sleeves, and create your own memories with a batch of these feather-light chicken and dumplings. The taste is heavenly, but the experience? Priceless.

More than just a recipe, it's a piece of my heart, passed down to you.
