Step-by-step

  • Crumble yeast in mixing bowl.
  • Stir in lukewarm milk, sugar and salt.
  • Let stand until the yeast is dissolved.
  • Stir in well-beaten eggs.
  • Add half of the flour.
  • Beat until mixture drops in sheets from spoon.
  • Stir in shortening.
  • Stir in remaining flour with hands, adding just enough to make a soft dough.
  • Knead until smooth and elastic.
  • Round up and place in greased bowl.
  • Cover with cloth and let rise in warm place until double, about one hour.
  • Punch down and let rise again until almost double, about 45 min.
  • Roll into a rectangle 1/4 inch thick and twice as long as it is wide.
  • Brush rectangle with soft butter and sprinkle with 1/4 cup sugar mixed with 1 tsp. cinnamon.
  • Roll up, then pinch to seal.
  • Prepare Butterscotch Mixture: (Mom did not do) Melt butter, add brown sugar, and dark corn syrup. Heat to dissolve sugar. Sprinkle with pecans and raisins. Pour this mixture in bottom of greased baking pan; then cut 1-inch slices of rolled up dough and place cut side up on top of the mixture.
  • Let rise about 30 minutes or double in size.
  • Bake in moderate oven (375°F) for 25-30 minutes.
  • Turn out on rack or cookie sheet immediately.
